Julia & BenjaminJulia Roberts had been dating fellow actor Benjamin Bratt for four years when he escorted her up the red carpet at the 2001 Academy Awards. That night she took home best actress for her role in Erin Brockovich (and broke the record for longest acceptance speech ever) and then three months later, the couple were kaput. The home-wrecking Oscar cloud may even have been hanging over Julia when she swooped in and stole current cameraman hubby Danny Moder from his then makeup artist wife. While the Oscar curse hasn’t affected Roberts’ career as much as others (she’s had marginal success with Oceans Eleven, Charlie Wilson’s War and America’s Sweethearts) there still haven’t been any other Oscar nominations despite commanding up to $25 million a movie. Editor’s NoteThe most recent case of Oscar romance wreckage comes from last year’s Academy Awards celebration. Glen Hansward and Marketa Irglova had fallen in love while making Once, a modern-day musical for which they won the Oscar for best song. Cue the obvious… the couple just announced they’ve parted ways. No word yet on who left with Oscar! Stay tuned for this year’s leading lady race. If favourite Kate Winslet takes home Mr. Oscar for her role in The Reader, will that spell the end for her and director hubby Sam Mendes? We’re not worried though - she will have a comfortable shoulder to cry on with ‘best friend’ Leonardo DiCaprio. |
