4 Pregnancy Comfort Tips

Stay comfortable and calm while you wait for baby

By Jackie Burns

While pregnancy can be an incredibly rewarding experience, let’s face it, those nine months feel more like nine years. Being deprived of certain foods and drinks all the while battling nausea and other discomforts can be trying to say the least. It doesn’t help that each month passes at a snail’s pace leaving you convinced you’ll be pregnant forever. Here are some tips to stay mellow when you want to scream and stay comfortable when you feel like a giant beached whale. Continue reading below...

Feet First

Remember the days when you met someone on the street and they looked you in the eye as they greeted you? Well forget about that once you’re pregnant! The focus now is on the belly and the belly alone and you’ll be lucky if your friends and family even remember you exist. Make sure all the tummy attention doesn’t lead you to forget about other important areas of the body – namely your precious feet. Wearing comfortable footwear with the proper support will help ward off those painful back aches that keep you awake at night. You’ll also be a lot less likely to lose your balance while carrying the extra weight if you have sturdy shoes. Don’t forget to invest in a pair of cozy slippers for your time around the house- which is more and more frequent these days!

Calm Before the Storm

Rather than focusing on the fact that your husband has you on speed dial as his full-time designated drive, try to rejoice in those final moments of peace and quiet before your world changes forever! Once the baby arrives, it’s going to be a while before you have the freedom to sit down and enjoy a movie from start to finish – so why not take advantage and kick back for a comedy movie marathon on the couch? Laughter can also help to ward off any anxiety you may be feeling about the upcoming birth.

Warm baths have been used for centuries for the relaxing effect on body muscles and pregnancy is certainly no exception. Just make sure the bath isn’t too hot by testing the water with your forearm as you would with a child. You don’t want to risk feeling faint or sick if the water is too hot! Check out the wide variety of bath soaks that will leave you feeling completed relaxed and at peace once you emerge from the tub.

Before you slip into something cozy for the night, make sure you apply some stretch mark cream to your growing belly to help prevent those blue lines that will keep you out of a bikini. Nipple cream can also be used in advance of giving birth to prepare your breasts for nursing.

Yoga, During and After Pregnancy

Towards the end of the pregnancy, it’s practically impossible to avoid feeling like a total blob. While it’s tempting to just curl up on the couch and pray for the due date to magically arrive, doing some pregnancy yoga positions may be a better option. You’ll be left feeling way more energetic and it will also help to centre you in a time of constantly changing emotions. Deep breathing during yoga will also help to prepare you for the impending labour.

For the first few weeks after the baby is born and well before you’re brave enough to try on your old jeans, yoga pants can be a comfortable alternative when you can barely find time to leave the house. They’ll also come in handy during those baby and mom yoga classes.

Hit the Pillow

One of the most common complaints from pregnant women is that they just can’t sleep at night. Try tackling the insomnia bug by using a body pillow which provides muscle and skeletal support. It can help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer (since you won't be tossing and turning) and provides you with a sense of security that no conventional pillow can. Some new comfortable sheets and an orthopaedic pillow certainly won’t hurt either and with the money you’re saving on going out these days, you can certainly afford to throw it towards the bedding budget! If all else fails and you are still lying awake counting sheep, try spending a little time reading pregnancy books and learning some helpful hints for the weeks and months ahead.
